It’s a long story – but basically I was in the bus station one day with my umbrella and something smelled very bad. Something very close to me. Fortunately it wasn’t my beloved Guatemala bag. Or any of my friends (hi Friends!). It was the umbrella. It smelled like cat urine.
I was afraid no one would sit by me on the bus. I didn’t want to sit by me on the bus. So I threw it away.
So here I am a week later, wandering aimlessly in the general direction of the market, and I run into my friend Almendra. She was looking for postage stamps.
I suggested she go to the post office. WELL, I guess you can tell that I just fell off the turnip truck. THE POST OFFICE!!! FOR STAMPS!!! What was I thinking?

According to my friend the post office is NOT the place to start your search for stamps. They carry very few stamps at the post office, and they don’t like to sell the ones they do have. They hoard them because they may need them for mail that people bring into the office.
I asked Almendra why the post office didn’t just get in a larger supply of stamps. Almendra says the post office doesn’t want to bother with stamps, because every one uses email these days. They feel they are becoming obsolete.
It appears to me that the postal officials are pouting. In fact I’ll go out on a limb and state that they seem to be exhibiting a very passive-aggressive response to new technology.
I will say I prefer pouty passive-aggressive mailmen to ballistic gun-toting mailmen, but still, whatever happened to “neither rain nor snow….”

Glad to see you back.
OK, so if you don't buy stamps at the post office where do you buy them?
The post office is pouty because nobody wants to use the correo, and nobody wants to use the correo because it has such an unreliable reputation. A lose-lose situation. Even the utility companies won't mail the bills here in Sonora. Too bad, I used to love to get letters, but at least we don't get junk mail. Imagine: the whole junk mail industry, at least where I am, is nonexistent!
That's so true about no mail! I never get mail here. The occassional utility bill, but as you say the banks and utility companies deliver their own mail. I love not getting piles of junk mail.
Brenda-- my friend was checking out the newspaper stands when I ran into her. And now that I think about it I remember a friend buying stamps when she bought postcards, so I guess places that sell post cards might sell stamps. Quien sabe?
hey, I want to add that I've missed you guys too!
